No-Sew Face Masks with Fabri-Tac

no-sew face mask

Once a month, our friends, Craft Box Girls, go live on our Facebook page, to teach a fun craft to viewers featuring one of our glues!  This month, Lynn taught viewers how to make two different kinds of no-sew face masks.  Homemade face masks have now become essential items during the COVID-19 pandemic after the CDC changed its guidelines recommending everyone wear some sort of face covering when out in public.  If you choose not to purchase a mask or don’t know how to sew, then this tutorial is for you!  You won’t need to go out to get any materials, as this tutorial only requires items you most likely already have laying around your house.  Let’s get started!

Important note: These masks are NOT hospital compliant.  They are for your own personal use.  A DIY face mask is not a replacement for a surgical mask but should be used for your own protection if you must go out in public.  As more information about the COVID-19 pandemic develops, some information in this post may have changed, so please check your local news for the most up to date information.

Face Mask #1 Instructions:

no-sew face mask

Step 1: Using the template provided, cut out 4 pieces of fabric.  After you cut them out, put the pieces face to face and make sure you mirror those pieces.

Step 2: Grab your Fabri-Tac and glue a line along the rounded edge of one of our fabric pieces.  Make sure the two pieces of fabric are face to face together and adhere.  Repeat this step for the second set of fabric pieces.  Then let glue dry.

Step 3:  After the glue is completely dry, unfold both sets of your fabric pieces.  On your first set, with the fabric facing up, glue your elastic on the bottom and top corner of one side.  Repeat on the opposite side.

Step 4: Take your second set and put it right on top of your first set of fabric pieces.  The faces of each set should be facing one another.  Then starting at the very top of the mask, glue a line.  Make sure your glue line is straight. After you apply your glue, seal the two pieces of fabric together and adhere some paper clips or clothes pins to hold the two pieces of fabric in place.  Make sure your elastic pieces are inside the two pieces of fabric.  Continue with the step until you’ve gone all the way around the fabric, but make sure you leave a small gap open so you can easily flip your mask inside out. (You can take the clothes pin or paper clips off about 5 minutes after adhering them.)

Step 5: Flip your mask inside out through the small gap.  Then, fold that opening in and glue a small line of Fabri-Tac to close the gap.

Note: Fabri-Tac is no longer toxic after you wait 24 hours for it to completely dry.  We recommend you wait for the glue to completely dry before wearing your mask.  It is also recommended that you wash your fabric before starting to make your mask.

Face Mask #2 Instructions:

Step 1: You will not need a template for this mask.  Grab some fabric and cut out two rectangles.  Measure of your rectangles are based on the size of your face.

Step 2: Cut out four long pieces of t-shirt.  The pieces shown in this tutorial are about an inch wide.

Step 3: With your fabric facing up, put a little line of Fabri-Tac about a quarter inch in from each end.

Step 4: Adhere the end of your t-shirt piece to the glue on one corner of the fabric, and make sure it is facing inward.  Then, adhere the other end of your t-shirt to the other end of the fabric.  Repeat these steps for the other side of the fabric.

Step 5: Gather your t-shirt pieces and place them in the center of the fabric, away from the edges.

Step 6: Grab your second piece of fabric, and with the face down, place it on top of your first piece of fabric with the t-shirt pieces gathered in the middle.

Step 7: Starting in one corner, glue a line of Fabri-Tac all the way around the fabric, but leave a small gap opening in the center so that you can flip it inside out.

Step 8: After your glue dries, flip your fabric inside out and seal your small opening together with Fabri-Tac.

Step 9: Tie it around your face and make it tighter or looser as needed!

And there you have it, two really easy no-sew face masks!  Fabri-Tac is washable, but we recommend waiting 24 hours for your glue to completely dry before throwing your mask in the wash.  We hope you enjoyed this tutorial and stay safe out there!
